Discus - Rio Negro Heckel Discus Wild
The Heckel Discus (Symphysodon discus) from the Rio Negro is the original, wild-caught Discus species - the fish that started the entire discus hobby. Distinguished by a bold, wide black vertical bar through the center of the body (the Heckel bar), and reddish-blue iridescent vertical striping on a warm brown body. Wild Rio Negro specimens are collected directly from blackwater habitats in Brazil and require soft, very warm, acidic water (82-88F, pH 4.5-6.5). For experienced Discus keepers who want to work with the genuine wild species.
