The Uaru (Uaru amphiacanthoides) is a fascinating, underrated South American cichlid from the Amazon and Orinoco basins, closely related to Discus. Juveniles display dramatic black markings on a brown body; adults transform into gorgeous bronze-copper fish with soft iridescent sheen and a distinctive triangle of black. Grows to 10-12 inches. A large, peaceful herbivore-leaning omnivore that does well in groups in spacious Amazon-style tanks with driftwood, subdued lighting, and soft acidic water (78-84F, pH 5.5-7.0). Requires plant-based diet including lettuce, zucchini, and spirulina pellets. At 1.5 inches and 50 available, an excellent opportunity to raise a group from juvenile.
