The Blackbelt Cichlid (Vieja maculicauda) is a large, boldly colored Central American cichlid named for the distinctive black vertical band that runs mid-body. Adults develop a rich rosy-pink to orange flush on the belly, especially during breeding coloration. Grows to 12-14 inches. Moderately aggressive; best kept in spacious aquariums of 100+ gallons with other robust cichlids or as a pair in a dedicated breeding setup. Omnivorous diet of quality pellets, greens, and frozen foods. Hardy and relatively straightforward to keep for intermediate-to-experienced cichlid hobbyists.
